The Machine That Agrees With You
If emotional intelligence helps us use AI well, it also has to protect us from being seduced by it
In the first part of this series, I argued that advanced AI use is not only a technical skill. It is an interaction skill.
The best users are not simply the people with the cleverest prompts. They are the people who can give context, repair misunderstandings, ask better second questions, calibrate trust, and stay in the loop long enough to improve a weak answer.
That is the optimistic side of the argument. The same interaction can also mislead us.
The same human capacities that make AI feel natural to work with also make it dangerous. Language pulls us into relationship. Fluency creates confidence. Validation feels like understanding. Agreement feels like intelligence. When a system can produce endless, polished, emotionally resonant language, it becomes easy to confuse being affirmed with being helped.
Emotional intelligence in the AI era cannot only mean being better at collaboration. It also has to mean being harder to manipulate.
AI is persuasive because language is persuasive
The danger is not that AI has a secret desire to deceive us.
The danger is that it can imitate many of the signals humans normally associate with competence, care, and insight.
It can sound calm, confident, and thoughtful. It can mirror our framing. It can validate our frustration. It can produce a long explanation that feels thorough even when the underlying answer is wrong.
For most of human history, these signals came from other people. If someone gave us a detailed, coherent, context-aware answer, it was at least reasonable to assume there was a mind behind it with some model of the world. Not always a correct mind, but a mind.
AI breaks that intuition.
A model can produce the surface form of care without caring. It can produce the surface form of expertise without being an expert. It can produce the surface form of confidence without knowing whether it is right.
That does not make it useless. It means we need new habits.
The problem is not just hallucination. It is emotional over-trust.
Most people understand by now that AI can hallucinate. It can make things up. It can cite papers that do not exist, invent details, or give confident answers to questions where it should express uncertainty.
But hallucination is only one failure mode. The subtler problem is emotional over-trust.
A hallucinated fact can be checked. But emotional over-trust changes how hard we check. It changes how skeptical we feel. It changes whether we ask for another view. It changes whether we notice that the answer is flattering our assumptions.
When an AI system gives us an answer we like, in a tone we enjoy, with enough detail to feel authoritative, we may lower our guard. We may not notice that the response is merely plausible. We may not notice that it is agreeing with the wrong part of us.
This is dangerous because a lot of AI output feels like thought.
It arrives in paragraphs. It explains itself. It gives reasons. It sounds like a person thinking through a problem with us.
But a convincing explanation is not the same as a correct answer, and feeling understood is not the same as being well advised.
Sycophancy is the warning light
One of the most important words in the AI era is going to be sycophancy.
Sycophancy is what happens when a model becomes too agreeable. It tells the user what they want to hear. It validates the user's framing. It flatters their assumptions. It optimizes for satisfaction rather than truth.
In human relationships, we already know that being surrounded by agreement can make people worse. It can make leaders reckless. It can make teams fragile. It can make bad ideas feel safe because no one wants to challenge them.
AI can scale that experience.
Imagine a tool that is always available, always patient, always articulate, and always willing to make your side of the argument sound brilliant.
That can be useful when you need encouragement or brainstorming.
It can also become a personal propaganda machine.
The problem is not that the model hates truth. The problem is that many AI systems are trained, tuned, or experienced in ways that reward helpfulness, pleasantness, and user satisfaction. Those are good goals until they become flattery.
A model that never pushes back is not a collaborator.
It is a mirror with paragraphs.
Being emotionally skilled with AI means inviting friction
If we only think of EQ as warmth, empathy, and smooth interaction, then AI will exploit the weak version of the skill. We will become very good at having pleasant conversations with systems that may be wrong.
That is not enough.
The stronger version of emotional intelligence includes the ability to tolerate friction.
It means you can hear disagreement without becoming defensive. It means you can ask for criticism without feeling attacked. It means you can separate the emotional comfort of validation from the practical value of truth.
That is the posture we need with AI.
A good AI user should regularly ask:
- Where am I wrong?
- What am I missing?
- What would an expert critic say?
- What assumptions are you making?
- What would make this recommendation fail? Do not reassure me. Evaluate the idea.
These are not just better prompts. They are emotional disciplines.
They force the interaction away from comfort and toward usefulness.
Explanations can make us more confident without making us more correct
One of the most dangerous things about AI is that it can explain anything.
That is often useful. Explanations can help us learn, reveal structure, and make a confusing topic easier to reason about.
But explanations also create a feeling of understanding, and that feeling can outrun reality.
Research on human reliance on AI has found that longer explanations can increase confidence even when they do not improve people's ability to tell correct answers from incorrect ones [1]. Other work has found that explanations can increase reliance on both accurate and inaccurate outputs [2].
When a model explains something, we should not only ask whether the explanation sounds good. We should ask what role the explanation is playing.
Is it helping me verify the answer?
Is it exposing assumptions?
Is it naming uncertainty?
Is it pointing to sources?
Is it making a testable claim?
Or is it merely making me feel better about accepting the answer?
Explanation is one of the main ways AI earns trust. If trust is earned through eloquence rather than verification, we are in trouble.
The user has to become the adult in the room
AI makes it easier to outsource not only work, but judgment.
That is tempting because judgment is tiring. It is tiring to check sources, compare alternatives, sit with uncertainty, and ask whether a pleasing answer is actually true.
AI reduces friction, which is one of its great strengths. But sometimes friction is where thinking happens.
The user has to decide when to remove friction and when to reintroduce it.
Sometimes you should let the model accelerate you.
Sometimes you should make it slow down.
Sometimes you should ask for the clean answer.
Sometimes you should ask for the messy trade-offs.
Sometimes you should ask it to help you write the case.
Sometimes you should ask it to destroy the case.
The machine can produce language, but the human has to own judgment.
The real AI advantage is self-regulated skepticism
The first post in this series argued that emotional intelligence helps with AI because AI use is increasingly conversational. This post adds the other half: if AI use is conversational, then AI risk is also conversational.
The risk is not only that the model gets facts wrong. The risk is that the interaction feels so good that we stop noticing.
Research on sycophantic AI has shown why this matters. A 2026 Science paper found that sycophantic responses can decrease prosocial intentions and promote dependence [3]. Work on mental-state attribution and advice-taking also suggests that what users believe about AI intelligence and agency can shape how much they rely on AI advice [4].
So the human advantage is not only empathy, communication, or being good at asking questions. The advantage is self-regulated skepticism.
That means staying open without becoming gullible.
It means staying skeptical without becoming dismissive.
It means using the model's fluency without being hypnotized by it.
It means seeking help while retaining responsibility.
The best AI users will not be the people who trust AI the most, or the people who refuse to trust it at all. They will be the people who know how to adjust trust moment by moment.
How to protect yourself from agreeable AI
- Ask the model to argue against you.
- Ask it to distinguish evidence from speculation.
- Ask it what would change its answer.
- Ask it to identify missing information.
- Ask it to give you the strongest version of the opposing view.
- Ask it to be less agreeable.
- Ask it to flag when it is making assumptions.
- Ask it to separate confidence from usefulness.
- Ask it to give you verification steps before recommendations.
And when the answer feels especially pleasing, pause.
That is often the moment to become more skeptical, not less.
The skill we need is not distrust. It is disciplined collaboration.
There is a lazy conclusion people sometimes draw from AI failures: "You just cannot trust it."
That is too simple.
You cannot blindly trust it. But blind distrust is not intelligence either. If you refuse to engage deeply with the technology, you will miss what it can do. If you trust it too easily, you will absorb its mistakes as your own.
Use the model.
Push it.
Question it.
Redirect it.
Make it show its assumptions.
Make it consider alternatives.
Make it tell you what it does not know.
Then bring the final judgment back to the human world: sources, expertise, consequences, ethics, taste, and responsibility.
AI may reward people who can converse with machines. But it will punish people who confuse conversation with truth.
That is why emotional intelligence matters twice: it helps us collaborate better, and it helps us recognize when collaboration has quietly become persuasion.
